Snow Machine at work!

In case you haven’t noticed, the skiing industry has been gearing up for a change in the weather. Yes, the “concept” of global warming has finally begun to have a financial impact on an industry the depends heavily on what the weather decides to do and when. Seeing as winters have gotten warmer and snowfalls have become more and more infrequent, it’s logical that the ski industry may be looking at a catastrophic melt down (pun intended) of their customer base.

12" Powder day in the Teton Village BackcountryAll seemed lost….until this January. Ski resorts in the Rocky Mountain range are reporting HEAVY snowfalls at the end of this month; something we have not seen in quite some time! While many resorts including those owned by Vail Corp. have been making snow since early this season, the amount of snow that has fallen in the last week has more than made up for the lack of snow on more technical runs and backcountry bowls and people are taking full advantage of these perfect conditions!

Grab your skis, snowboards, snow-skates (hopefully not) and split boards and lets take a look at the US resorts reporting the most snow to kick off this fine February!

PowpowBridger Bowl, MT– Located in good old Bozeman Montana, this resort already has a 77 inch base, with nearly a foot of new snow in the past 48 hours! Boasting 2,000 acres of skiable terrain, this more mellow resort is a great alternative to beating the traffic at Big Sky!PowSilverton, CO– A gem of Colorado, and a well-kept secret, Silverton should be renamed Powderton based on its annual snowfall! Yes its hard to get to, yes you need a guide for the winter months…but god will you be thrilled when your chest deep in champagne powder singing “hallelujah and praise the lord”. With one lift, this resort is a hikers dream. Also check out their helli-packages! 110″ base with 22″ in the past 48!

Wolf Creek, CO– Another Colorado powder hub that just won’t quit! 92″ base and 18″ in the past 48 hours means it might be worth the six-hour drive if you’re in the Denver Metro Area! Don’t call them a resort, they are far from it! Nestled between Wolf Creek Pass and Pagosa Springs CO, this mountain stands alone, away from the distractions of the real world. Yes! Come here if you want to ski ’til you drop and then sleep it off ’til the next day and do it again! Cheapest lift tickets in CO!

gallery_2Grand Targhee, WY– With plenty of resorts nearby, you have your options…I’m just telling you to go to Targhee! With a 91″ base and more snow forecasted to be on the way in the next 48, this resort is experiencing amazing conditions at the start of this February!

Of course if you’re feeling frisky and you want to hop over a few puddles there is always Nassfeld Hermagor, in Austria currently reporting a 146″ base on the upper mountain 55″ of that fell friday only to be buried by another 61″ on Saturday!

Get out there and enjoy this winters snow offering! We got lucky this year!
