Sand Dunes

Coral Pink Sand Dunes

While there are plenty of beaches, deserts and areas of “sandy hills” shaped by the wind and water, most people would be surprised to find out the amount of “high dunes” we have here in the US. Here are a few of the highlights for us at OutdoorEnd. Keep in mind that some of these dunes are OHV friendly while on others, that is a strict NO, NO!

Great Sand Dunes National Park, CO– A national treasure, and the remains of an ancient river flowing between two mountain ranges, Great Sand Dunes National Park is the epitome of natural sand formations. Essentially a collection of silt at an ancient river delta, the dunes were deposited before the uplift of the Colorado Plateau, and have been augmented by the erosion and dispersion of rock from the Sangre Del Cristo mountains. Regarded as the largest dunes in North America, Great Sand Dunes National Park hosts over 30 square miles of dunes, with its largest one rising up over 800-ft!

little sahara

The dunes vary in height from 25 to 75 feet, and  are constantly moving and morphing. Little Sahara has 100 camp sites with water and electricity as well as a good spread of backcountry sites!

If you’ve never had fun on a pile of sand before, these places are worth checking out. Sand-boarding is also a popular sport, similar to skateboarding, but done on a flat, waxed board down steep pitches on dunes. Get out there and have fun!
