Workouts SUCK!

Workouts SUCK!

Workout! Pain! Gain! Push Pull! Motivation! Hate! Love! Acceptance! Growth!  Why the hell do we do this?! Faster, Bigger, Stronger! More adventures to accomplish, more stuff to do. Break the Monotony!

Last week I covered the training pieces to becoming a better athlete.. and now I will cover the essential tools to train, endure and recover while you are out on the adventure’s of your lifetime.

To determine what the best options are, you have to answer these questions…

What type trip I am doing?

How far am I going?

How fast will it pass?

Type of Trip:

Short and Quick.  You feel it instantly.  Your heart is pumping out of your chest while your legs churn out yet another rotation.

I would recommend this to bikers pedaling a sub-one and a half hour hill ride, runners on the road for 45 minutes to an hour, hikers moving fast over rough terrain (Class IV and V), snow-shoe racers, Crossfitters and other sprint based activites.

Best Gel: Clif Shot Blox

Great gummy texture, some even provide a caffeine boost.  I would choose these over the beans, gels and other gummies any day of the week to boost your glucose levels, increase the production of ATP and hence, get greater output over your musculature, gel shots are the hit for you.

Best Drink Mix: Vega Lemon Lime Electrolyte Hydrator

Well balanced, rich in electrolytes and free of sugar or artificial sweetners; Vega electrolyte Hydrator is the supreme team dream of sustaining workout drinks.

Best Recovery Formula: Garden of Life Raw Meal

At the end of the day, your throat is filled with cotton, your threshold has been broken and your thighs feel like they are floating above your hands.  After a day like this, you need to recover with the best.  Garden of Life Raw Meal is complete plant-based nutrition, has a bioavailability of 98 (meaning your body digests it with incredible efficiency) and provides plenty of protein and amino acids, digestive enzymes, healthy fats (medium chain triglycerides) and all essential enzymes to utilize in the recovery process.  Sure it doesn’t make you feel the same as beer, but it will certainly keep you in top form afterwards.

Half a Day Hurrah

Recommended for athletes training with a two to four hour bike ride, a half-day slogging hike logging 10-14 miles, a rower pushing 20,000 meters, a runner pushing 7+ miles, climbers on a 14er and other half day endurance programs.

Best Bar: Perfect Foods

perfect foods

Sugar! Fat! Deliciousness!  All of the essential needs for a tough run, bike, row across the ocean and beyond.  They are incredible at taste and provision of energy for all of the hardcore endurance athletes out there.

Best in the moment Drink: Accelerade

Multi-Day Manifestations

All of the above mentioned goods, provide sustained energy.  I would also add a focus on couscous, lightweight quick cooking carbs, along with dried soups from Whole Foods…. unstoppable.

Til next go. Let’s keep the adventure alive.
